Abstract
Background: Results of many studies show a correlation between low serum cholesterol and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Depression has become one of the most significant public health problems in Korea. Therefore, this study evaluated the correlation between low serum cholesterol and depression scale score in healthy persons at a general hospital.

Methods: Examination was performed at the health promotion center of Seongnam Central Hospital between 2010 and 2014 on 463 adults (40, 66 years old; 161 males, 302 females) without diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cerebral vascular accident, cancer, neuropsychiatric disease, chronic renal disease, liver disease, or thyroid disease.

Results: Binary logistic regression analysis of depression scale scores serum cholesterol, age, and sex showed that older men with lower serum cholesterol have a higher depression scale score.

Conclusion: Healthy older men with lower serum cholesterol have a higher depression scale score. Thus, it is more useful to screen the possibility of depression in elderly with low serum cholesterol level.
